Statt schick und teuer geht es hier schlicht und besinnlich zu. Im Aquarium neben der Eingangstür zieht eine kleine Schildkröte ihre Bahnen und gibt das Tempo vor. Die dunklen Holztische sind mit Bastmatten gedeckt, Kunst ist hier das auffälligste Raumschmuck in der ansonsten klösterlich schlichten Atmosphäre des Restaurants. Bevor die Inhaberin Christiane Waszkowiak vor vier Jahren das Bio-Hotel gegründet hat, war sie Galeristin. Aus wenigen Zimmern, die sie für ihre Künstler bereithielt, ist inzwischen ein kleines, privat geführtes Hotel mit 30 Zimmern geworden, die alle von Künstlern gestaltet sind. Die Kombination aus Bio-Hotel und biozertifiziertem Restaurant ist einzigartig in Berlin. Im Restaurant gibt es schnörkelloses, frisches, hausgemachtes Essen, das ausschließlich aus hochwertigen Bio-Zutaten zubereitet wird. | GEO SAISON Nr. 06/2008 Biohotels: Schlafen Sie grün - Das mitArt "Wir sind anders als das, was Sie sich unter einem Biohotel vorstellen", sagt Christiane Waszkowiak, die Geschäftsführerin des Hotels "Mitart" in Berlin. Es klingt wie eine Warnung. Dann lächelt sie und ergänzt: "Wir sind nicht so ein Hotel mit viel Holz und Geranien und Birkenstocksandalen. Wir sind ein Stadthotel." Die Zimmer liegen zum ruhigen Innenhof, sie haben Parkettboden, die Wände sind weiß gestrichen, einfache Möbel stehen in den Räumen, Holzstühle, Eisentische, große Betten, an den Wänden hängen Bilder internationaler Künstler. Jedes Zimmer ist ein Unikat. Im Café erzählt die Geschäftsführerin vom Bio-Anspruch im "Mitart": In der Küche werden nur Ökoprodukte verwendet, Energie werde gespart, Wasser auch, und TV wurde gar nicht erst angeschafft. Zum Fernsehen kommt der Gast sowieso nicht. Berlin Mitte liegt direkt vor der Fußmatte des Hotels und bietet mehr Kunst, Klatsch, Mode und Glamour als jede Sendung. Das Haus: Berlins erste Biopension ist inzwischen ein Hotel mit 30 Zimmern. Und sonst? | Guardian mitArt, Berlin It once housed the GDR's National Military Printing Press, producing a ready supply of propaganda. Now it's Berlin's first green hotel, offering a showcase for up-and-coming contemporary artists in the lively, cosmopolitan Mitte district. The owner, Christiane Waszkowiak, started out running a modern art gallery that offered accommodation for the new artists she exhibited. Gradually, it grew into a small hotel. In 2005, she expanded the operation by moving to this turn-of-the-20th-century building, decorating the interior in contemporary style with eco-friendly paints and varnishes. The courtyard is filled with herbs, lemon bushes, fig trees and a banana palm. Rooms are stylish and uncluttered, with dark wooden furnishings, white bedding and, of course, contemporary artworks. Electricity comes from renewable sources and cleaning products and guest soaps are organic and biodegradeable. Recycling of everything from plastics to cans is standard practice, and any waste organic matter from the kitchen is collected in separate containers for composting. The cafe on the ground floor serves only organic food - sourced as much as possible from local suppliers. The hotel provides information on things to do and see in the area, and Christiane is particularly knowledgeable on the local art scene. |

After passing through three rooms of paintings ans sculptures, you have a choice of some rooms, three with private bath. Each is beautifully furnished, but simply, for the clientele who like this place – professors, successful artists and art-lovers. It's near Museum Island, and only 400 yards from the Friedrichstraße S-Bahnhof station. The manager, Mrs. Waszkowiak, speaks excellent English. All prices include a "healthy" breakfast, meaning food that is ecologically correct. |

So go the Unter den Linden Boulevard, the most important theatres (Berliner Ensemble, Deutsches Theater ...), and two of Berlin's three opera houses (Komische Oper and Staatsoper). S-Bahnhof Friedrichstrasse is 400 meters away.
